MIRADOR with Gary Hoffman Soto

With nearly eighty years of life devoted entirely to the movement arts and somatic practices, Gary Hoffman Soto stands as a remarkable source of wisdom, experience, and authenticity.

Soto is a dancer and creator deeply convinced that our personal history shapes the body—and with it, the way we feel, think, and act. For him, moving in an embodied way is a form of expressing our most profound humanity.

For over four decades, he worked alongside American dancer and choreographer Anna Halprin, a committed artist who understood the body as a tool for reflection, growth, resistance, and healing. Halprin demonstrated that dance can be protest, language, and transformation.

Throughout his unique trajectory, Soto has developed his own sensitive and profound practice, integrating influences such as Mindfulness, the Feldenkrais Method, Capoeira, and various martial arts. Each of his movements is an act of self-awareness and presence.

One of his main creations is Swimming Dragon, a practice that merges Eastern traditions like Tai Chi and Chi Gong, resulting in a unique somatic language inspired by ancestral traditions of conscious movement.

As part of the MIRADOR cycle, on May 31st we have invited Gary Hoffman Soto to lead a three-hour workshop, where he will guide us through various conscious practices that integrate improvisation through somatic work. During the workshop, he will offer different approaches to move from the essential, open ourselves to the unknown, and release what we think we know.

As is tradition in this format, the artist will close the day with a live performance. On stage, Soto will share a series of themes connected to his current life journey, revealing his stage presence—which is always honest, vibrant, and deeply human.
